Nyaruguru District is one of the 8 districts that make up the Southern Province of the country. It is located in the south western part of the province and has a surface area of 1,010 km². It consists 14 sectors, composed of 72 cells and 332 imidugudu.
In the East, Nyaruguru District borders with the District of Huye. In North the District borders with Nyamagabe and Huye District. In the West it shares its borders with the Western Province and the Republic of Burundi. In the South there is the Republic of Burundi.
The District of Nyaruguru has got a relief ranging between 1,600 and 1,800 m of altitude. Its average rainfall is around 1,200 mm, its temperature average is of more or less 20°C. The environment of Nyaruguru District is consisted population of more than 300,000 people, their agro-pastoral exploitations, their dwellings, land, the vegetation cover and the animals, as well as the hydrographic network.
The relief of the District of Nyaruguru is very scattered. The hills take the aspects of peaks. There is a chain of high mountains known as “IBISI”, located in the former communes of Gishanvu, Runyinya and Nyakizu. This chain of mountains is only a branch of the Congo-Nile Peaks.
